Defense & Veterans Affairs

As a member of the House Committee on Defense and Veterans Affairs, I had the opportunity to visit military installations and have discussions with leaders and troops in the field. I fought for and will continue working on critical issues affecting our current service men and women, as well as veterans who have served foreign tours of duty in the past. These issues include:

One of the top priorities facing Texas’ veterans is the need for regional access to health care facilities for veterans and their families. Providing our veterans with access to local health care facilities relieves a burden on veterans and their families. Realizing this, I supported the development of a veteran’s health care facility in every region of the state. This would ensure our veterans would have access to quality health care without the burden of driving long distances for necessary care.

I understand the importance and value of having affordable and accessible higher education available to veterans and their families. An educated workforce is a vital key to economic development, and Texas is leading the effort to grow and strengthen our economy by ensuring our veterans and their families have access to a quality education.

We must also do everything we can to provide our veterans with the mental health resources necessary upon their return. The availability of mental health care for veterans and their families will help to ease the difficult transition back into their family life. Whether it is through small community groups or MHMR centers across the state, I understand the importance of establishing programs and resources to help support our veterans and their families transition back into their communities.
