State tax swap isn’t even, with $5 billion shortfall

Lawmakers passed a tax swap four years ago that has turned out to be a tax swamp.

The Legislature’s top budget-writing staff member told a panel Wednesday that the built-in fiscal gap the state faces is nearly $5 billion a year. While they knew that a reworked business tax meant to make up for a large chunk of property tax cuts has sputtered, legislators hadn’t been told in such precise – and stark – terms how big the problem was. State Representatives Accepting Applications for Armed Services Scholarships

Texas State Rep. Dan Gattis and Texas State Rep. Diana Maldonado are accepting applications from high school seniors in House District 20 for the new Texas Armed Services Scholarship program.

The scholarship provides $10,000 for students entering a college ROTC program n the Fall of 2010. To be eligible students must be nominated by their State Representative or State Senator or the Texas Lieutenant Governor or the Texas Governor. (more…)

State Representative Diana Maldonado (D-Round Rock) joined with Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples Jan. 14 to announce $9.5 million in funding through the state’s Texans Feeding Texans: Home-Delivered Meal Grant Program. Through this worthwhile program, Williamson-Burnet County Opportunities Inc. will receive $79,000 to help deliver meals to homebound or elderly Texans. (more…)

TSTC holds option on Taylor facility
