Lead With Who You Are

Creating Campaign Communications That Truly Resonate

One of the most powerful tools in your campaign isn’t your slogan or your yard signs—it’s your ability to clearly and consistently communicate who you are, what you believe, what you do, and how you respond under pressure. That’s what voters are really listening for.

So, how do you speak with that kind of clarity and resonance?

It starts with understanding that your campaign isn’t just about your platform... It’s about your leadership. And leadership is something people feel through your words, your tone, and the energy behind your message. Let’s break it down:

Who You Are

Tell the story of why you care. Share moments that shaped your leadership. Be specific, not polished. Voters don’t expect perfection—they want authenticity and a sense of shared values.

Ask yourself: What life experiences prepared me for this role? What do I care about, even when no one’s watching?

What You Believe

Don’t just list policy points—share your convictions. Speak to the values underneath your priorities. When voters understand what drives you, they trust you more (even if they don’t agree with everything).

Ask yourself: What would I still fight for if it cost me politically? What do I want people to say about me when I’m not in the room?

What You Do

Be specific and proactive. Show what you’re already doing—not just what you plan to do. Talk about your actions in the community, your approach to service, and your commitment to showing up.

Ask yourself: How am I already making a difference? What small stories show my bigger values in action?

How You Respond

This is where trust is built. Voters want to know: How will you show up under pressure? When things get messy, will you stay grounded, respectful, and principled? Your tone, demeanor, and emotional presence matter.

Ask yourself: How do I want people to feel after hearing me speak? What does “grace under fire” look like in my leadership?

The best campaign communication doesn’t try to impress—it connects. It makes people feel something. It gives them a reason to believe not just in your message, but in you. If you’re not sure how to get there yet, you’re not alone.

Inside Candidate School, we walk you through exactly how to craft a message that reflects your integrity, clarity, and purpose—and how to deliver it in a way that lands.
